It’s short notice, but if you happen to be in the Chicago area, a great creative event is happening this Friday. Diaspora: The Art of Blackness, an event that celebrates art, design and music in observance of Black History Month, is jointly sponsored by Metropolitan Board of the Chicago Urban League, The Society of Typographic Arts and the AIGA, and curated by Lashun F. Tines, who is also responsible for all of the event design you see below. The event has now sold out twice over, but a few tickets have been made available especially for DWL readers—RSVP here. Ben Whitla: Boylston Trading Co. Patch Design

Perhaps it is my strong ties to my Boston roots, but I’m really loving the patch designs Ben Whitla recently developed for Boylston Trading Co. Boylston, a curated menswear boutique, is the brainchild of Frank the Butcher, who worked with Mitchell & Ness to create the Vintage Varsity Jacket and patches you see below. Below you can see an excellent video where he breaks down the details of the process and elaborates on the reasoning behind every decision that went into its design and production, so be sure to scroll all the way down and take a look.

Tim Boelaars: Bob Van Hulst Business Card

The embossed effect found on these business cards designed by Tim Boelaars is actually a property of the paper used, GF Smith Colorplan. Colorplan has actually includes a palette of 50 colors and 25 different embossed textures—not sure it’s available at all in the US but I will certainly be on the lookout.

Ludlow Kingsley: Fix Food Identity and Website

Here’s a great identity and site design by Los Angeles-based Ludlow Kinsley (who is also responsible for Milton Glaser’s beautiful new site). Fix Food is a nonprofit created by director Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) and others, whose aim is to change the food system by encouraging Americans to take direct action.
