Esmeralda is a new display serif from Sudtipos, which was heavily influenced by classic capitals carved in stone, and includes a huge amount of ligatures and alternate glyphs. Type Love: HWT Unit Gothic

HWT Unit Gothic is the latest release from the Hamilton Wood Type Foundry, a digitization of the Unit Gothic series, which was released by Hamilton Manufacturing Co. in 1907. The family consists of seven fonts, each containing 600 glyphs that include Greek and Cyrillic character sets, plus alternate characters based on the actual special character production patterns from the Hamilton Wood Type Museum. Type Love: Tomato

Tomato is a new discovery for me, but it was actually produced in 2005 by Canada Type. This curvy display face is actually an expanded digitization of an early 1970s Franklin Photolettering film type called Viola Flare. The complete family features various sets of alternates, swashes and ligatures, allowing for all sorts of design possibilities. Pick it up at You Work for Them or MyFonts.

Type Love: Program

Program is a new sans serif from Emigre. Designed by Zuzana Licko, Program is a “type designer’s typeface”:

…It’s about the craft of typeface design and the particular details and effects that type designers fret over when they design type. It mixes different structures, stem endings, and weight distributions not usually employed in a single family of fonts. It features both rounded edges evoking the effects of reproduction, and ink traps, the technique used to counteract that effect. The idea was to create a series of fonts with strong individualistic features, challenging the constraints of a central theme that is usually imposed on a family of fonts, while still relating to each other in terms of overall look and feel.
