Design Work Life: Cataloging Inspiration Daily

First of all, I can’t do this week’s Quick Links with­out men­tion­ing that New York finally passed the Marriage Equality Bill—woohoo! It was also incred­i­bly serendip­i­tous that the announce­ment was made dur­ing Pride Week and when the Empire State Building was lit up like a rain­bow.

And on another seri­ous topic, lately there has been quite a bit of chat­ter in the design com­mu­nity over gen­der roles, some­thing that’s def­i­nitely been on my mind as of late. I read quite a few inter­est­ing opin­ions on the issue last week, so I thought I’d gather some of them all together in one place:

• It would seem that the con­ver­sa­tion started with this arti­cle found on GOOD, Why We Can’t Let Design Become a Boys Club. (Also check out their list of 25 female design­ers and illus­tra­tors they love.)
• Much of the debate stemmed from Evan Stremke’s Momentus project — a project I’ve showed some excite­ment for in the past — which has an all-male con­trib­u­tor list. He per­son­ally addressed the issue here and here.
• We heard a cou­ple of responses from females in the design world includ­ing Margot of Pitch Design Union, Melanie Richards of Fuzzco, Tiffany Rolfe of AdAge and Katie Kirk of Eight Hour Day.
